Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) is a serious medical challenge. It can be difficult to detect early in a patient’s clinical presentation and is associated with poor prognosis. Early recognition of renal injury is crucial and may help prevent further renal damage and functional impairment 4
The Alere Triage® NGAL Test is a point-of-care fluorescence immunoassay to be used with the Triage® Meters for the rapid, quantitative determination of Neutrophil Gelatinase Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) in EDTA anticoagulated whole blood or plasma specimens.
NGAL Levels dramatically increase in response to renal ischemia within 2 hours of injury, where it is believed to play a role in repair and nephrogenesis.9
In comparison, serum creatinine, the most commonly used functional marker for the diagnosis of AKI, does not rise until 24-72 hours after the initial renal insult.4
