From 2009/10, the NHS is being asked to implement a uniform and universal vascular risk assessment and management programme called ‘NHS Health Checkfor people in England aged between 40 and 74; the proposals for which were set out in Putting Prevention First published on 1 April 2008. The recent “Next Steps” guidance from the DH stated that some GPs are using, or planning to use, near patient testing (NPT) to support their vascular checks.
“The use of NPT, of course, has distinct advantages. Results and lifestyle advice can be provided for a person in one appointment. This may increase uptake and motivation to adjust lifestyle.” DH Vascular Checks Next Steps Guidance for PCTs (Nov 2008).
