Bilirubin
Bilirubin is a breakdown product of haemoglobin. High levels can be seen as a result of increased haemolysis, liver damage or occlusion of the bile ducts. High levels are often seen in neonates due to postpartal haemolysis and delayed functioning of liver enzymes. Free, unconjugated bilirubin can be calculated from the Total Bilirubin, minus the Direct Bilirubin.
There is a variety of Quality Control materials available for the measurement of Total and Direct Bilirubin. Please take a look at our General Chemistry QC pages or request a copy of our QC catalogue.
