Cholinesterase
This reagent is intended for the in vitro measurement of the activity of cholinesterase in serum. The enzyme is synthesized in the liver and so it is a sensitive test of liver function.
The enzyme is most commonly assayed to identify farm workers who have been exposed to organic phosphorous insecticides or to identify individuals with genetic variants of the enzyme, prior to surgery. These individuals will exhibit prolonged apnea following administration of the muscle relaxant succynilcholine, which is widely used in surgery. The assay can be performed with and without dibucaine or fluoride for identification of cholinesterase variants.
