epoc® Blood Analysis: wireless; near patient; low cost

Epoc system

The epoc blood analysis sytem is nothing short of a revolution in point of care testing. Designed to provide immediate multi-parameter results at the patient's side, epoc is the first and only wireless system to use Smart Card technology, providing state-of-the-art lab results directly to a hand held mobile computer.

The epoc blood gas and electrolyte test card provides all of the measured and calculated results required for respiratory monitoring including: pH, pCO2, pO2, Na, K, iCa, Hct, HCO3, TCO2, Base Excess, sO2, Hb and Lactate. Other test cards are also scheduled for release, further increasing the flexibility of the system. Not only is the device convenient and easy to use, the quality of test results is equal to or better than laboratory systems. This is because the system's biosensors are exposed to fresh blood immediately after sampling and before any degradation occurs that could compromise the results.

epoc fits in with the flow of the clincal care process in both primary and secondary care, providing immediate results when and where they are needed. In the community it can play a key role in the management of chronic respiratory conditions providing immediate assessments that can help to keep people out of hospital. In hospital wards it can be used at the bedside, avoiding the need to run back and forth to a workstation or laboratory. Additional readers can be plaved wherever they are most convenient, with multiple readers interacting with one hand-held mobile computer.

epoc is economical, easy to use, requires no refrigeration of consumabnles and interfaces directly with exisitng wireless systems, generating essential results in 30 seconds. Simply add 95 microlitres of blood directly to the test card and insert it into the small handheld reader. With automatic bar code scanning for patient ID, operator ID and test card information, data entry and transcription errors are minimised. Calibration and quality control is also peformed automatically and, as ther esults are captured immediately, there is no chance of post-analytical errors. And in adition to all the benefits in terms of speed, convenience, performance and data transfer, the epoc costs no more (and often less) than conventional analysers.
