Heart MOTs in Birmingham

Male life expectancy in Birmingham is below the average compared to other similar sized cities; More than half of the male population live in deprived areas of the city where life expectancy is below 70 years of age, almost 10 years less than the average in more affluent areas. Vascular disease, particularly Coronary Heart Disease is a major cause of premature death and in April 2006 the Birmingham Health and Wellbeing Partnership (comprising the three Birmingham PCTs and Birmingham City Council) published an action plan to improve male life expectancy by 2010.

The Scheme
In November 2006 Birmingham Health and Wellbeing Partnership (BHWP) piloted its Heart MOT service, targeting men over 40 years of age who are at risk from vascular disease. The partnership took the decision to deliver the service via community pharmacies as research shows that men who are unlikely to visit their GP or clinic visit a pharmacy at least once per year....
