NHS Health Checks - Heart Smart Project, Wales

Coronary heart disease  (CHD) is a major cause of illness and death in Wales. Smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet are contributing factors and have a huge impact on the health and well-being of the population. The Heart Smart project was established to raise awareness of CHD in workplace settings. A joint venture between Bridgend Local Health Board, Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust and businesses and organisations throughout the Bridgend area, the project was funded by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Inequalities in Health Fund.

The Heart Smart project ran from 2003 to 2008 and provided a confidential work place screening programme for coronary heart disease. The project was particularly aimed at individuals who did not regularly visit their GP/Primary Health Care Team and adopted a coaching style approach to help its clients question and modify their risk factors, empowering them to make healthy lifestyle options.
Businesses were offered the opportunity to allow their employees to attend a visiting mobile clinic for a free of charge assessment. Attendees who were over 35 years and had 3 or more risk factors were offered a full CHD assessment including point of care blood tests.
