NHS Health Checks - The Big Bolton Health Check
Bolton currently has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the North West, accounting for over one third of all deaths – about 1000 people a year – in the area. It is also the leading cause of heath inequalities in the area. There are currently over 88,000 people over the age of 45 in Bolton who do not have existing CVD or diabetes and of those approximately 24,000 are believed to be at high risk of developing the disease within the next 10 years.
The scheme
NHS Bolton (formerly Bolton PCT) commissioned and developed an ambitious, large-scale scheme to address this problem ‘head on’ by systematically inviting every person over 45, without existing circulatory disease or diabetes, to attend a free health check.
